The online gambling community had expected that the Barney Frank bill would be debated soon after Independence Day. The hearing will now be delayed until at least September, and possibly later, according to the Poker Players Alliance.
The reasons for the gambling bill hearing delay, however, are not frivolous at all, since they are being pushed off in order for the US Financial House Services Committee to debate urgent legislation with regards to the current economic crisis in the United States. Those in the online casino industry have been hoping that the Frank bill, HR 2267, would be adopted soon because it would lay the groundwork for regulating and legalizing online gambling in the United States. A number of foreign online casinos and some of the bigger online gaming companies have recently settled a number of pending cased with the United States, as they are hoping to return to the US online gambling market when the existing laws brought about by the adoption of the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) are changed. The frustration these companies had felt in the past must be increasing since the most recent delay has occurred. Frank, however, does not seem concerned by the temporary delay. At this time, there are at least thirty-five co-sponsors for his online gambling bill, who come from both Democrat and Republican stock. Frank has assured the anxious supporters of his bill that their personal freedom to choose to gamble online will be recovered. He simply said: "We'll get it done." |
