The UK White List is currently frozen, and no new applications are being processed pending a review of the gaming legislation in the UK. White List status allows those who qualify to advertise their online gambling operations in the United Kingdom.
Those wishing to advertise their Internet gambling sites in the UK need to comply with criteria such as fair game play and their compliance with certain regulatory standards. The countries in the European Economic Area do not need to seek White List status in order to advertise themselves in the UK, however, those companies that are based offshore and overseas are required to do so. The DCMS (Department of Culture, Media and Sports) have acknowledged that they have frozen the White List, but did not respond to any other related questions. The review has been requested by the DCMS after UK gambling operators filed complaints that they were unable to compete with the gambling companies that operate from offshore locations. The reason for this is that taxes in the UK, apart from VAT (Value Added Tax), are calculated on 15% of gross profits. Overseas gambling operators pay little or no tax. The other complaint came from those sectors of the gambling operators who are also charged a levy over and above their other taxes. The review will look into the cost of the levy being shared by foreign operators, since it is there to help those with gambling problems. The DCMS has requested that the findings of the review be given to them by the end of 2009. |
