Need for a Roulette Glossary
Roulette, as with all casino games, has its own glossary. The glossary refers to the terminology used in the game of Roulette. These terms can refer to parts of the Roulette wheel, the different kinds of bets and different strategies for different games.
Roulette Terminology
- American Roulette: This game uses a Roulette wheel with 38 compartments, from 1 to 36 and 0 and 00. With 00, American Roulette gives the edge to the house.
- Backtrack: The outer rim of the Roulette wheel where the ball spins.
- Big Number: A number that gets hits more often than is theoretically possible.
- Black action: Betting with a black chip worth $100
- Bottom Track: Inner area of a Roulette wheel which is slanting or stationary, where the ball slides before bouncing from the wheel onto the pocket
- Check rack: The tray that holds chips. Also called chip tray.
- Choppy game: When no one is winning consistently for both player and the house
- Column bet: When a player bets on one of three columns in the Roulette wheel.
- Corner bet: When a player bets on four numbers by placing Roulette chips at the intersection of these four numbers.
- Croupier: Employee of the casino who operates the Roulette table
- Dozen bet: A bet on any marked three sets with twelve numbers
- Fibonacci Betting System: A betting system with a progressive combination of numbers
- Five number bet: In American Roulette, where players bet on 0, 00, one, two and three, all at the same time.
Some More Roulette Terms
- House edge: The advantage the house has to make profits on the games; estimated as the difference between true odds and the actual payout that the casino makes.
- High bet: When players bet on any of the numbers from 19 to 36
- Inside bet: A bet on or between numbers in the boxes of the layout.
- Low bet: A bet on any of the numbers from 1 - 8
- Non Value Chip: A gaming chip issued by the casino whose dollar value depends on the amount of the chips taken in a buy-in.
- Outside bet: Betting with even money (black/red, high/low, odd/even) and the payout is 1:1
- Parlay: When a player places his bet on the table and leaves it with an added new bet, ready for the next spin.
- Payout: The winnings the casino pays to a player
- Pinching: Illegal removal of chips from the betting table after the result is declared.
- Quarter bet: A player bets on one of four numbers, similar to corner bet or square bet
- Reds: Chips issued by the casino worth $5
- Six number bet: Betting on six numbers at the same time.
- Split bet: Betting on two numbers together
- Straight bet: Betting on just one number.
- Street bet: Betting on three numbers
- Wheel Clocking: Keeping track of the spins to determine patterns, possibilities and bias.
- Wheel Head: Part of the Roulette wheel that has the numbered pockets.
- Wheel roller: A croupier or Roulette dealer
