The Aim of the Game of Baccarat The aim of baccarat is quite simply to correctly bet on the player winning, the banker winning or a tie being achieved. In order to win, you must achieve a total hand value as close to 9 as possible. This is done by adding up the value of the cards in your hand, by using a total of two to three cards. In a baccarat game, an Ace has a value of 1, all face cards and tens are worth 0 points and all other cards are worth their face value. If the total value of your hand is greater than ten points, you subtract ten from the total. For example, if you are dealt a 2 and a 9, the total value would be 11. In this case, you would subtract 10 from the total, leaving you with a total hand value of 1. The Baccarat Table The baccarat table is large and symmetrical, accommodating up to fifteen players at one time. The players are seated around the table in seating areas that are designated by numbers. The table is divided into six areas, including the croupier or caller area, 2 dealer areas, discard trays, a drop box and a tip box. As well as these areas, there are three betting rows around the table for the players, the bankers and then closest to the center, for tie bets. Placing Bets in Baccarat As mentioned above, there are three betting areas on the baccarat table - the player, the banker and a tie. Players can place bets in any of these three areas, designating that they believe that the player will win, the banker will win or there will be a tie. Playing the Game of Baccarat The game of baccarat is played with between 1 and 8 packs of cards. If it is played with one pack, the cards are shuffled between hands which will prevent card counting. The rules for casino games of baccarat at an online casino are very similar to those at a land-based casino. Each player is offered a turn to be the dealer, but can pass on the shoe if they choose. Dealing a Third Card in Baccarat There are very defined rules regarding when a third card is to be dealt to a player. Players are dealt a third card if their cards total 5 points or less and they must stand on a total of six or more. A dealer is dealt a third card if their cards total 2 points or less and they must stand on a total of 7 or more. The dealer is also dealt a third card if their cards total three and the player's third card is an 8. If a player's first two cards total 8 or 9 points, this is known as a natural hand. Winning in Baccarat If players bet on the player or the banker and win, they will be paid out at 2 to 1. If they bet on a tie and win, they will be paid out at 9 to 1. Winnings are paid minus the vigorish which is the commission that is typically 5%.
